I agree with OP. I have seen a lot of compounds touted as superior only to find out later they have a narrower therapeutic window or require more complex administration protocols. The 'old standbys' are often well characterized for a reason.

Neuroprotection is a different beast entirely. For general tissue repair, I am still leaning towards the established compounds. The data is just more robust for them right now.
