My research subject keeps complaining about a metallic taste anyone else get this

So my current research subject a lab rat obviously has been making some weird faces. I swear it is trying to tell me something. I mean I know it is a rat but the little guy seems genuinely distressed. I am running a study on a new peptide for muscle regeneration and it is going well otherwise. But this metallic taste thing. I am pretty meticulous with my preparation and handling. All sterile technique and high purity compounds. I even double checked the water for reconstitution. Nothing seems off. Could it be the peptide itself? I have not seen this listed as a known side effect in any of the literature. Maybe my rat is just a drama queen. Or maybe I am missing something obvious which would not be the first time. Any thoughts from the hive mind are appreciated. This is for research purposes only of course and not for human consumption.

It is probably just a behavioral anomaly. Rats are weird. I would not overthink it unless you see other adverse effects.

My rats sometimes just make weird faces when they are bored. Are you providing enough enrichment? Just a thought.

Hmm interesting. I have never encountered a metallic taste reported in my animal models with peptides. Are you sure it is not something else in the environment?

Could it be a contaminant in the peptide batch itself? Even high purity stuff can have trace elements. Have you run an ICP MS on your compound?

I have had subjects exhibit strange behaviors that were entirely unrelated to the study compound. Sometimes they just have their own quirks. Maybe your rat just hates Tuesdays.

Good point about environmental factors. I did a quick check on the bedding and cage materials but nothing stood out. I will look into the ICP MS idea that is a good suggestion. Thanks for the input.

I agree with the contamination theory. Even very small amounts of heavy metals could cause a metallic taste sensation. It is worth investigating.

I have seen some peptides cause a slight alteration in taste perception in human studies but that is a different context obviously. For a rat it is hard to say what 'metallic taste' even means to them.

I would definitely pursue the contaminant angle. Better safe than sorry when you are trying to isolate the effects of your peptide. Reproducibility is key.
