Is 'sterile water' really the holy grail for reconstitution or is it just marketing?

That's fair. My point is, if my distilled water is truly sterile at the moment of reconstitution, and my handling is aseptic, what's the *added* benefit beyond the bacteriostatic property for longer storage? Is there something about the water itself?

Yeah, but for immediate use, does it matter that much? If you're reconstituting and using it within a day or two, is the bacteriostatic agent really critical?

I always use bacteriostatic water. The benzyl alcohol helps prevent bacterial growth, which is a big plus for storage over time. Distilled water won't have that protection.
