A quick look at split dosing schedules for your lab subjects

Hey everyone just wanted to drop some notes on how I structure split schedules for my rodent subjects when running longer trials. A lot of folks new to this space try to do everything in one single daily drop which can sometimes lead to uneven activity levels across the twenty four hour window. Breaking the total daily amount into two equal parts spaced roughly twelve hours apart tends to keep things much more stable in the subject system based on my observation logs. When you work with shorter half life compounds this approach becomes even more critical for keeping steady plasma levels. I always use a standard insulin syringe and make sure my math is solid before touching any bacteriostatic water. Take your time calculating concentrations and write everything down in a dedicated lab notebook so you never have to guess later on.

That is totally fair and definitely depends on the specific compound you are testing. For longer acting items a single drop is totally fine but short half life stuff really benefits from the spread.

I am not totally convinced that twice a day is necessary for everything. Sounds like a lot of extra pokes for the poor subject when a single drop usually gets the job done just fine.

RIP to my math skills trying to calculate microgram amounts at three in the morning lol. Seriously though a spreadsheet template saves so many headaches.

Spreadsheets are an absolute lifesaver. I have a whole tab dedicated to tracking reconstitution volumes and expiration dates.

Make sure you always wipe the rubber stopper with alcohol every single time too. Contamination is no joke when you are storing vials in the fridge for weeks.
